The British government is piloting a new app that will offer incentives such as vouchers for shops, theme park passes, and cinema tickets for people who eat healthily and exercise more. The town of Wolverhampton was chosen for the pilot because of its population’s major weight issues. A 2014 survey estimated that 70 percent of adults in the city are obese or overweight and a third of residents are classed as being physically inactive. According to the British Heart Foundation, Wolverhampton’s child obesity is above the national average with 40 percent of year six children in the city classified as overweight. HeadUp Systems is leading the app pilot. The international company uses wearable technology, data science, AI, and machine learning to help people identify areas of their health that they need to improve.
