The White House on Tuesday confirmed President Joe Biden wants to see the child tax credit expansion—which was added as part of the latest stimulus bill—become a permanent policy moving forward. The child allowance grants were increased as part of the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package, and drastically expands the nation’s welfare state. Some experts called it a move toward universal basic income. As part of the stimulus, the credit was increased to $3,000 per child from ages six to 17, and $3,600 for children under six. It was made fully refundable, and payable in monthly instillments of $300. Before this, the maximum annual credit was $2,000 for every child under 17.
