The number of American citizens filing new claims for unemployment benefits declined to its lowest level for the year in the week ending Feb. 26, according to latest data from the U.S. Department of Labor. Seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims were at 215,000, a decline of 18,000 from 233,000 in the week ending Feb. 19, a March 3 news release from the department said. The four-week moving average during the period fell by 6,000 to 230,500. Unadjusted claims fell by 21,285 to 194,693. “The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.1 percent for the week ending February 19, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending February 19 was 1,476,000, an increase of 2,000 from the previous week’s revised level,” the release said.
