The largest active volcano, Hawaii’s Mauna Loa, erupted for the first time in decades and prompted a warning from the U.S. Geological Survey.
Mauna Loa erupted at around 4:30 a.m. ET on Monday, according to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in a recent alert. The eruption is the first since 1984.
The USGS, which also tracks earthquakes, said that it boosted the volcano alert level from “advisory” to “warning” on Monday morning. Currently, the USGS lists the eruption as “WARNING, Color Code: RED.”
“At this time, lava flows are contained within the summit area and are not threatening downslope communities,” the USGS stated in a news release. “Winds may carry volcanic gas and possibly fine ash and Pele’s hair downwind,” it said, referring to a type of lava….
