Big cities seem to be a less attractive option for Canadians who are looking for a place to settle down, as more people are moving out of urban areas and into peripheral communities. In the latest release, Statistics Canada found the population growth rate in urban regions slowed between July 1, 2019, to July 1, 2020, a 0.4 percent drop (from 1.7 percent to 1.3 percent), compared to the same period the previous year. However, over the long-term, urbanization is still the trend, and the population growth in census metropolitan areas (CMAs) remain higher than other regions in the country.
