The United Nations Framework on Climate Change (UNFCC) on Sept. 17 released its synthesis report detailing nationally determined contributions to meeting the Paris Agreement’s targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The report concluded that the planet is on its way to exceeding the Paris targets of 1.5 degrees and 2 degrees C warming above pre-industrial levels. In a statement, U.N. Secretary General António Guterres said the report “shows that the world is on a catastrophic pathway to 2.7-degrees of heating.” “Science tells that we need a 45 per cent cut in emissions by 2030 to reach carbon neutrality by mid-century.
