The UK government has unveiled plans for new laws to crack down on illegal immigration in the English Channel, which will ban anyone who arrives illegally from claiming asylum.
More than 45,000 illegal immigrants crossed the English Channel in small boats to reach the UK in 2022. And the latest Home Office figures show nearly 3,000 illegal immigrants have crossed the Channel already this year.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has made “stopping the boats” one of his five priorities, and has said he is “determined to deliver” on his promise.
Announcing the new legislation in the House of Commons on Tuesday, Home Secretary Suella Braverman said it would “betray” British voters not to tackle illegal Channel crossings….
