Uganda passed what it calls the “Anti-Homosexuality Act, 2023” into law on May 29.
More than 30 of Africa’s 54 countries already have laws criminalizing homosexuality, including Uganda, where a colonial-era law makes sexual activity “against the order of nature” a criminal act.
Those found to violate the law face life imprisonment, regardless of consent.
In the new law, those who are found to have committed attempted homosexuality face up to 10 years in prison.
The new Ugandan legislation also goes further by imposing a death penalty in some cases, and imprisonment for promoting homosexuality, among multiple other provisions related to homosexuality.
