Just after midday Feb. 14, Ottawa got an unexpected Valentine’s Day present with blockading truckers moving rigs from many city streets and concentrating them nearer the main protest area along Wellington St. According to a man who was directing drivers near the corner of Albert and O’Connor streets, the breakthrough came after contact between city officials and protest leaders. It turned out that on Feb. 12 Mayor Jim Watson had sent one of the protest leaders, Tamara Lich, a letter in which he set down his worries if the situation continued. “My overarching concern is for the safety and security of our residents, business owners and workers in the downtown core, who are innocent collateral damage of this unprecedented national and international demonstration,” Watson wrote.
