The trial of two former Minneapolis police officers charged for their role in the 2020 death of George Floyd will be delayed until January 2023, a Hennepin County judge ruled on Monday.
Former Minneapolis Police Department officers Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng are charged with aiding and abetting second-degree unintentional murder, and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.
They were due to go on trial next week but judge Peter Cahill has ordered that court proceedings be delayed until Jan. 5 next year, citing a guilty plea by a third officer, Thomas Lane, last month.
Lane, 39, pleaded guilty on May 18 to a state charge of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. As part of a plea agreement, the former officer had one count of aiding and abetting second-degree unintentional murder dismissed. He will be sentenced on Sept. 21….
