Her dedication and commitment to competitive swimming earned her a scholarship at the University of Kentucky. This year, she found herself competing against Lia Thomas, a biological male transgender athlete who dominated women’s swimming in 2022 by shattering previous records and by winning the women’s 500-meter freestyle NCAA National Championship.
In this interview, Gaines recounts her experience racing against Thomas and the dejection she endured when NCAA officials chose Thomas to hold the fifth-place trophy instead of Riley after the two tied in the 200-meter freestyle championship event….
