Of course you want to kick back. It’s summer vacation, after all. But the reality is when you are vacationing with kids, you need to be extra vigilant.
“Especially in families with toddlers and young children,” notes Dr. Lois Lee, a pediatric emergency medicine physician at Boston Children’s Hospital and Chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Injury, Violence and Poison Prevention. “When we are on vacation and out of regular routines, that is when families should be vigilant about safety in their environment,” she said.
That’s especially true around water. Did you know that drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death among children 1 to 4? And it’s the third leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children 19 and under? And for every child who dies from drowning, another five receive emergency care for nonfatal submersion injuries….
