Protests erupted through Chinese cities and campuses during the weekend, with some residents calling for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its top leader to step down, an unprecedented show of defiance in decades.
The widespread demonstration, from the capital of Beijing to the southern city of Nanjing, came after an outpouring of public anger and massive protests erupted in the far west region Xinjiang where strict COVID-19 curbs were blamed for ten deaths and nine injuries in a high-rise apartment fire in Urumqi, the region’s capital city. Local authorities denied the accusation.
The largest street protest appeared to be in Shanghai, China’s most prosperous city. Crowds of demonstrators gathered for a vigil at Wulumuqi Middle Road, a street named after Urumqi on Saturday evening, according to online videos and attendees….
