The driver of a rented box truck was arrested by the Secret Service Monday night after crashing into security barriers near the White House, according to officials.
Anthony Guglielmi, chief of communications for the Secret Service, confirmed the incident in a statement on Twitter, saying there were no injuries to Secret Service officials or White House personnel after the crash occurred around 10 p.m. on May 22.
“The cause and manner of the crash remain under investigation,” Guglielmi said. “Road closures are in effect and pedestrian walkways are closed as we investigate.”
Guglielmi said in a separate Twitter post that the truck had been “deemed safe” by the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia, adding a preliminary investigation revealed the driver may have “intentionally struck” the security barriers on the north side of Lafayette Square at 16th Street, located directly north of the White House….
