There’s no law against sex-selective abortion in Canada, and a Conservative MP is hoping to change that. In the House of Commons on Feb. 26, Cathay Wagantall introduced a private member’s bill that would amend the Criminal Code to ban medical practitioners from performing an abortion sought solely because of the child’s genetic sex. Those convicted of an indictable offence under this provision could face up to five years in jail, while those with a summary conviction could be jailed for up to 18 months.
