This report will be updated throughout the day OTTAWA, Canada—Heavy police presence remains in downtown Ottawa on Feb. 19, a day after law enforcement escalated operations against protesters opposed to COVID-19 mandates, to clear demonstrations around the area of Canada’s Parliament buildings. Many protesters and vehicles have already been cleared from the capital, but some still remain. Police advanced its frontline further on Feb. 19, closing in on the main site of the protest area in downtown Ottawa. The expanded police operations came following the federal government’s use of the Emergencies Act. Police said they made over 100 arrests and towed 21 vehicles from the downtown core on Feb. 18. Mounted police and officers on foot advanced on protesters on Feb. 18, knocking down demonstrators in some cases. Some police officers were heavily armed, with some carrying assault riffles.
