More than 500 Rohingya migrants from Burma fled Malaysia’s immigration detention center on April 20, with six of them being killed on a highway while fleeing, a Malaysian official said.
Malaysia’s immigration chief Khairul Dzaimee Daud said that a total of 528 Rohingya escaped from the Sungai Bakap Temporary Immigration Depot in Penang after breaking down doors and barrier grills.
“A total of 362 detainees have been re-arrested. The search for the remaining detainees is continuing,” Khairul said, according to The Malaysian Reserve.
Khairul made no mention of what caused the breakout.
Police said that six detainees—two men, two women, one girl, and one boy—were killed in a road accident while attempting to cross a highway. Investigations and searches for the escaped detainees are still ongoing.
