New York City has lost nearly half a million residents in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, with most city-dwellers having flocked to the southern states, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates.
The U.S. Census Bureau revealed on May 18 that the Big Apple witnessed an exodus of over 468,200 between April 2020 and July 2022, resulting in a 5.3 percent decrease in its population. The most significant decline occurred between 2020 and 2021, with a loss of slightly over 281,000 individuals.
Among the U.S. cities surveyed during the same time frame, only three suffered worse population decline in terms of percentage. San Francisco, California, experienced a loss of 7.5 percent of its residents, while Louisiana’s Lake Charles and Massachusetts’s Revere lost 6.9 percent and 5.9 percent respectively….
