JAIPUR, India—Narendra Modi’s government is under fire from various quarters over the country slipping to near the bottom in the Global Hunger report in 2021 despite having huge food stocks. In the 2021 Global Hunger Index (GHI), India ranks 101 out of the 116 countries and the worst part is that the report puts the second most populous nation behind its neighbours Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. In 2020 it ranked No. 94. The index is a peer-reviewed annual report, jointly published by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe, designed to comprehensively measure and track hunger at global, regional, and country levels. The publishers say that the index aims to trigger action to reduce hunger around the world. “With a score of 27.5, India has a level of hunger that is serious,” it says in the report.
