LOS ANGELES—The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is offering legal aid to the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) in its appeal of a ruling that struck down its COVID-19 vaccine mandate for students. The LAUSD Board of Education authorized on Jan. 25 its legal team to aid SDUSD in their legal appeal whose outcome could set a precedent for school districts and vaccine mandates in the state. The two Southern California school districts have undergone a parallel journey when it comes to vaccine mandates for students. Back in September, both the LAUSD and the SDUSD issued mandates requiring students over the age of 12 to be vaccinated against COVID-19 by the start of 2022’s spring semester—though neither districts’ mandates took effect according to the original schedule.
