The citizen-led redistricting commission called for more districts in Los Angeles after the council president criticized the commission’s proposed map and introduced a motion to create a new redistricting committee. The Los Angeles City Council Redistricting Commission argued the city has kept the same number of districts for decades as the population has grown, leading to a disproportionate ratio of residents to district representatives. “Expanding the number of council districts is necessary to better create council districts boundaries that reflect the city’s 99 neighborhood councils and 114 neighborhoods,” the commission’s report stated (pdf). “Ultimately, Los Angeles lags behind other large cities in the county, state, and U.S. with respect to the ratio between councilmembers and residents.” The commissioners did not say how many districts should be added but recommended the council look into creating a task force to develop a strategy in the future.
