The Justice Department is establishing a specialized unit focused on domestic terrorism, its top national security official said Tuesday. Matthew Olsen, the assistant attorney general of the department’s National Security Division, told a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee that, based on the assessment of the Intelligence Community, the United States faces “an elevated threat from domestic violent extremists.” He described these “extremists” as “individuals in the United States who seek to commit violent criminal acts in furtherance of domestic social or political goals.” He noted that FBI investigations into suspected domestic violent extremists have more than doubled since the spring of 2020. “We have seen a growing threat from those who are motivated by racial animus, as well as those who ascribe to extremist anti-government and anti-authority ideologies,” he added.
