WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on Friday lodged an appeal to Britain’s Supreme Court against a lower court’s decision to extradite him to the United States. The U.S. government has levelled an 18-count superseding indictment against the 50-year-old Australian, meaning he would face a 175-year prison sentence if convicted. However, the U.S. authorities said in its appeal that a sentence of between three and six years was more likely. Assange, who did not appear in court, is wanted by U.S. authorities over WikiLeaks’ publication of vast troves of classified U.S. military documents and diplomatic cables in 2010 and 2011. The application came two weeks after Washington won its appeal over Assange’s extradition in London’s High Court, which saw Assange moving a step closer to facing charges of violating espionage law and conspiring to hack government computers in the United States.
