Japan canceled more than 100 domestic flights on Sunday due to heavy snow in the northern and western parts of the country, which the meteorological agency forecasted will persist through to Tuesday. In a statement on Dec. 24, the agency warned of a strong cold air mass flowing into Japan from Dec. 25 to Dec. 28, forecasting heavy snow to occur in areas along the Sea of Japan coast of northern and western Japan. The winter pressure pattern will intensify over the four-day period, reaching the Pacific coast of western Japan and the flatlands of the Shikoku and Kyushu regions, it stated. As of Sunday, 82 centimeters of snowfall were recorded in Myoko, Niigata Prefecture, while Daisen in Tottori Prefecture recorded 72 centimeters of snow.
