Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb has vetoed a bill that would bar transgender athletes from competing in girls school sports across the state. In a veto letter on Monday, Holcomb, a Republican, said that he feels the legislation “falls short” ” of providing clarity and a consistent state policy for what he called “fairness in K-12 sports” in Indiana. The “presumption of the policy laid out in HEA 1041 is that there is an existing problem in K-12 sports in Indiana that requires further state government intervention,” wrote Holcomb, who signaled support for the bill last month. “It implies that the goals of consistency and fairness in competitive female sports are not currently being met.
