NEW DELHI—India arrested two Chinese women and ten others accused of operating a racket in New Delhi that duped 40,000 people through an infected app circulated on WhatsApp. This is the most recent incident of cybercrime involving Chinese apps, some of which may be linked to Chinese espionage. The infected app helped the accused capture the personal data of unsuspecting people for illegitimate purposes. It lured people by offering them lucrative returns on an online multilevel marketing campaign. The cybercriminals allegedly offered the victims $41 (3000 rupees) of daily commission for spending 30 minutes on the app called NewWorld for promoting internet celebrities on Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube. Once the unsuspecting users downloaded it, the apps installed malware that took control of the users’ social media accounts.
