Idaho Gov. Brad Little on Wednesday signed into law a measure that bans abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, which is at about six weeks of pregnancy. The measure has an enforcement mechanism inspired by a Texas law that allows private citizens to file lawsuits against abortion providers. “I stand in solidarity with all Idahoans who seek to protect the lives of preborn babies,” Little wrote in a letter on March 23 (pdf) to Idaho Lt. Gov. Janice McGeachin, who is also the president of the Idaho Senate. Little is facing a primary challenge from McGeachin, who has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump.
