HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif.—After a heated outcry from the public, the city council withdrew a motion June 7 to appoint an ad hoc committee that would deliberate behind closed doors and create ballot measures on changes to the city’s charter or constitution.
Instead, the city council will directly vote in two weeks on which charter amendments will appear on the November ballot.
This comes after a charter review committee appointed by the Huntington Beach City Council suggested several controversial amendments to the city’s charter at the meeting.
Among 18 proposed amendments, the public took the most interest in the changes regarding the city’s attorney, clerk, and treasurer. The review committee chose in favor, after six months of deliberation, to change the three elected official’s positions to appointed….
