PITTSBURGH, PA—Pittsburgh’s mayoral election next week will be historic no matter who wins. Pennsylvania state representative Edward Gainey is the favorite to become the city’s first African-American mayor in this traditional Democrat city. However, if he is beaten, the city will have its first Mexican/Native-American mayor, Tony Moreno, who would also be the first Republican in City Hall in generations, though his history has not been with the GOP. Gainey argues for the “de-militarization” of the police and more beat police engaging the community, while Moreno, a military veteran and a former Pittsburgh street officer, says crime is spiking. Moreno told The Epoch Times that he pledged not to defund the police. “I will keep the city safe,” he said, adding that he advocates smart police policies.
