Willy Joseph Cancel, an American citizen and former U.S. Marine, has died in Ukraine this week while fighting against Russian forces, according to his family.
Cancel had been working for a private military contracting company when he was killed on April 25, the 22-year-old’s mother, Rebecca Cabrera, told CNN.
The Marine veteran worked full-time as a corrections officer in Tennessee and signed up to work for the private military firm prior to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. After the war started in February, the company asked for contractors to aid in the war effort.
Cancel agreed to join and flew to Poland on March 12 and entered Ukrainian territory around March 12.
