Warrior king and “Papa” Michael Jeffery has been remembered as the former Australian governor-general who treated everyone with dignity. Prime Minister Scott Morrison led mourners on Tuesday at the state funeral for Major General Jeffery, who died on Dec. 18, aged 83. Among the congregation at the ANZAC Memorial Chapel of St Paul at Duntroon in Canberra was Governor-General David Hurley. Former prime ministers John Howard and Julia Gillard were unable to attend because of coronavirus travel restrictions. Simon, one of Major General Jeffery’s four children, is also overseas. The general’s funeral was held at the place where his long career of public service started. Australia’s 24th governor-general left Western Australia at age 16 to join the army at the Royal Military College, Duntroon.
