George Floyd died from a lack of oxygen while being restrained by police officers last year, a medical expert told the court during the trial of one of the former officers involved. “A healthy person subjected to what Mr. Floyd was subjected to would have died as a result of what he was subjected to,” Dr. Martin Tobin, a lung specialist at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital and Loyola University’s medical school in Chicago, told the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. Chauvin and two others officers restrained Floyd on May 25, 2020, after Floyd resisted arrest and fought being placed in a patrol car. Floyd eventually stopped moving on the ground and was soon declared dead.
