Masking has been a contentious issue, dividing our society almost from the pandemic’s start. Wearing a mask held some natural attraction in the early days of the pandemic. But masking continues to appeal to those who are fearful and to those desiring control over the behavior of others. At the same time, many doubt their efficacy and insist that mask-wearing should be a personal choice. Are masks effective as protection from COVID-19? Is there a larger strategy behind the governmental and media push for mask mandates? Our Constitution does not provide the federal government with the power to issue a sweeping mask mandate, and First Amendment challenges have been raised even at the state level.
