Commentary In this installment of School’s Out, host Sam Sorbo tackles the issue of teaching children basic life skills, which are vital to them having a sense of competency and how they view their place in the world. She gives examples of skills that were once taught in school such as: home economics, shop and design. Many of these classes no longer exist in today’s schools so students miss out on the rudimentary skills that should be a part of their overall education experience. Many students have to take remedial classes in college to get them up to the level they should have been while still attending high school.
