A bipartisan group of senators from The Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs (HSGAC) will join the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Alejandro Mayorkas, on a visit to the Southern Border, in El Paso, Texas, Friday, but the press is not allowed to cover the trip. The HSGAC is the Senate’s primary oversight committee with broad jurisdiction over government operations and specifically the DHS, which Mayorkas was recently confirmed to lead. The DHS office of public affairs put out a statement Thursday stating the reason for Secretary Mayorkas’s visit is, “to view operations and receive a briefing on the processing, shelter, and transfer of unaccompanied children arriving at our border,” adding, “This trip will be closed to press due to privacy and COVID-19 precautions.” White House press secretary Jen Psaki was recently asked why the Biden administration hasn’t released images from the migrant facilities.
