Dear Russ: Most people change hinges for decorative reasons, but hinges do wear out. When a door is fully open, there is a lot of weight cantilevered out, supported by the pin in the hinge. When you couple this with moisture issues in bathrooms and kitchens that cause corrosion, it isn’t surprising that the hinge doesn’t move properly. Good-quality hinges can be expensive, so first try cleaning and lubricating them. Most large hinges, particularly ones on interior room doors, have removable pins.
