Canadians say human rights and rule of law are more important than trade opportunities with China, a new Angus Reid poll says. The survey, published on Jan. 10, asked respondents what they think Canada’s priority should be in its dealing with China, and whether they are worried about the economic consequences of standing up to China. Three quarters (77 percent) of the respondents chose human rights and rule of law as more important for Canada’s relationship with China, compared to 23 percent who placed trade and investment as higher priority. The majority result is reflected across region, gender, and political spectrum in the country, with at least 72 percent in each believing that moral issues take precedence.
