Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today he is revoking the use of the Emergencies Act, saying the situation is no longer an emergency. The Prime Minister defended invoking the Act in the first place, saying “It was the responsible and necessary thing to do.” He made the announcement during a press conference in Ottawa on Feb. 23 as the Senate was debating the motion to invoke the Act, after MPs voted to approve the motion along party lines on Feb. 21. Trudeau invoked the act on Feb. 14 to deal with the protests and blockades calling for the end of COVID-19 restrictions and declared a public order emergency, granting the federal government powers to freeze bank accounts of protesters and supporters without a court order, as well as being able to compel towing companies which had refused to tow trucks parked in downtown Ottawa since Jan. 28.
