Some of the most fun I had growing up was playing violin in the orchestra at my public high school in Michigan. Arts education ought to be the part of every school’s curriculum. But what priority should it get?
A California initiative would mandate it be given top priority. It’s officially named the Arts and Music in Schools—Funding Guarantee and Accountability Act. The group pushing it has a name like a Wagner opera: Californians for Arts and Music Education in Public Schools. On April 26, the group announced it had gathered 1 million signatures, well more than the 623,200 valid signatures needed to qualify.
