More property buyers are considering relocating as they struggle to put together a deposit amid surging home prices. Late last year, Sydney man Matthew Brophy finally found a way around the housing affordability problem. He and his wife decided to relocate, purchasing a house about 13kms from Brisbane’s CBD. Brophy, a school teacher in his early 40s, grew up in Sydney’s northwest and had been keen to settle in the area. But he couldn’t find a single property in Seven Hills or neighbouring suburbs to fit his budget. By contrast, he secured a four-bedroom Brisbane property, on a 700-square metre block, for about $600,000. “The prices were so much cheaper in Brisbane, particularly with regard to the proximity to the city and still having a mortgage that’s reasonably comfortable to pay on one wage,” he said.
