The United States still does not know how many Americans are in Afghanistan, President Joe Biden told reporters on Friday, but will evacuate every U.S. citizen who wants to leave the country. “We’re working to verify that number of Americans that are still in the country, because we don’t know the exact number of Americans that are there,” Biden said at the White House in Washington. “We want to get a strong number as to exactly how many American citizens are there and where they are,” he added. Estimates from the government of how many Americans are stranded in Afghanistan have ranged from 5,000 to 15,000. Officials have said they’re not sure of the number in part because Americans do not have to report to the government when they travel to foreign countries.
