The U.S. government on July 11 extended protection for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan nationals who are in the United States.
Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, a Biden appointee, granted an 18-month extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the approximately 343,000 Venezuelans who were in America as of March 8, 2021.
“This action is one of many ways the Biden administration is providing humanitarian support to Venezuelans at home and abroad, together with our regional partners. We will continue to work with our international partners to address the challenges of regional migration while ensuring our borders remain secure,” Mayorkas said.
TPS, established by Congress in 1990, enables the secretary of homeland security to give protection to immigrants from certain countries if the secretary finds the immigrants’ home countries meet certain legal criteria, such as being embroiled in an armed conflict….
