Australia’s population growth projection for the next decade has fallen by over one million people compared to previous forecasts due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the latest annual population report due to be released on Jan. 6, the Australian government predicts that the total population will rise from the current 26 million to 29.9 million in 2032-2033.
The new figure is around four percent lower than what was predicted in the 2021 report and is mainly caused by a drop in migration as a result of COVID-19 restrictions and a decline in the fertility rate.
The forecasted downward trend in Australia’s birth rate is also caused by record-low levels of migration during the pandemic, as there will be fewer migrants to give birth….
