TAIPEI—A 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit the sparsely populated southeastern part of Taiwan on Sunday around 1:19 p.m., according to the island’s weather bureau, but there were no immediate reports of damage.
The U.S. Geological Survey measured another quake at a magnitude 7.2 at 2:44 p.m., with the U.S. Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning in Taiwan after the tremor.
A 5.1 magnitude aftershock followed 13 minutes later, according to the USGS.
Initial reports indicate serious damage to buildings and train stations in the area.
The area has been experiencing tremors of 4.6 to 5.2 magnitude since an earlier quake hit on Saturday.
