A pastor of an Edmonton church remains in custody after been charged with breaking Alberta’s COVID-19 rules and continues to refuse compliance with his bail conditions. Pastor James Coates of Edmonton’s GraceLife church has been defying public health orders for weeks and holding services that provincial officials say violate COVID-19 restrictions on maximum gathering capacity, masking, and social distancing. “We’ve been consistent in our approach of escalated levels of enforcement with Pastor Coates, and we were hopeful to resolve this issue in a different manner,” Parkland RCMP Insp. Mike Lokken said in a statement. “The pastor’s actions and the subsequent effects those actions could have on the health and safety of citizens dictated our response.” Alberta public health measures have ordered faith services to be limited to 15 percent of normal capacity and with mandatory mask use.
