The federal government proposed new gun control legislation Tuesday that would introduce the long-anticipated buy-back program for recently barred firearms. Bill C-21, which comes nine months after the Liberal government announced a ban on the use, sale, and importation of “assault-style” weapons, will also allow municipalities to ban handguns, and increases criminal penalties for gun smuggling and trafficking.
