Adam Hadwin of Canada fired a 4-under-par 66 late Thursday to secure the first-round lead in the U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.
Hadwin moved ahead of Rory McIlroy, who shared the lead at the conclusion of his round and ended up in a five-way tie for second place at 3-under 67.
McIlroy, a four-time major champion from Northern Ireland, was tied with Joel Dahmen, England’s Callum Tarren, David Lingmerth of Sweden, and MJ Daffue of South Africa.
