Queensland federal MP George Christensen has backed a motion by Bob Katter to reclaim the Port the Darwin from a Chinese company that owns a 99-year lease amid concerns about the security of Australia’s north. The motion will call on the Australian government to force Chinese company Landbridge to sell the Port of Darwin to an Australian buyer, with Christensen saying it was a matter of “national sovereignty.” “We want to see the Port of Darwin, and quite frankly every other bit of strategic asset, strategic infrastructure, and strategic port across the country that’s in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party or their minions, back under Australian control,” Christensen told 2GB radio on June 9. “That is the aim of this motion we’re putting forward,” he added. “I note we are doing a review into the ownership of the Port at the moment, so that’s a very good move.” …
