Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) introduced their National Right to Work Act of 2021 to ensure that all American workers can “choose to refrain from joining or paying dues to a union as a condition for employment.” The proposal repeals six provisions of current federal law and regulation that grant labor unions power to collect mandatory membership dues from all employees in a workplace covered by a representation agreement. Twenty-seven states have adopted right to work laws since they were authorized by the Taft-Hartley Act of 1947, but the federal government has not followed suit despite a 1988 Supreme Court ruling in Communications Workers of America v.
