President Joe Biden has issued a response to a document reportedly leaked from the Supreme Court that suggests the high court has decided to strike down Roe v. Wade, the 1973 seminal precedent that made abortion legal throughout the United States.
While the document written by Justice Samuel Alito that Politico describes as an “initial draft majority opinion” has yet to be confirmed as genuine, the president issued a statement Tuesday “with the critical caveat” pending the confirmed authenticity of the document.
Biden’s statement goes over three points.
It reaffirms his administration’s efforts to argue in support of Roe v. Wade, with Biden saying, “I believe that a woman’s right to choose is fundamental, Roe has been the law of the land for almost fifty years, and basic fairness and the stability of our law demand that it not be overturned.”
